About the Space: Shared bungalow in French Place

Each time I feel that the outside world is lacking some necessary magic, I am comforted by the notion that there is magic lurking at home. Surrounded by the records and writings that have brought me so much joy, each day is a chance to resurrect that joy, to re-experience and reinvent. Regarding Austin, I may not have as many friends as I once did, but at least I have the blank canvas that is this house. Not to mention a splendidly grounded roommate…

About the Space: Birdhouse Gallery on the East Side

“Birdhouse” – the sharp edges of an incomplete world would cut you if you didn’t limbo jiggly behind it through what you thought was a wall holding the worked up, your gymnastics snapping that wall in place like safety belts as you pass through it so you can relax and enjoy yourself as the world completes itself around you.

About the Space: Shared house in Cherrywood

This house was my home for just over two years. It’s known as the “M.G.P.”: Musical Garden Palace. I recently had to move, but living there gave me a sense of home and freedom that I’ve never experienced before. The house is a sanctuary for creative output and discovery. My quality of life skyrocketed upon moving in there; [I found] rejuvenation, comfort, opportunity, collaboration, relaxation. It has all the charming elements of a classic Austin home: garage studio, campfire capabilities, big trees, beautiful landscaping, great natural lighting, wood floors, vibrant paint job, sunny yellow tiles, and the musky smell of good times predating my stay there. My favorite aspect was the screened-in porch, where I spent as much time as possible. If my piano were out there instead of inside, it would have been pure bliss.

About the Space: Sisters’ house on Far West

This is the place where I can find seclusion from life distractions. I write music, drink all the tea I want, watch the sun set on the cedar trees, and play a duet with an African Grey Congo parrot. Also, the acoustics in this place are amazing; the wooden floors and high ceilings create a natural reverb that I can’t find anywhere else. The main draw to this place for me is its location in the Hill Country.

About the space: Shared house on East Side

I built my house. To whatever degree you are able to create your own house, I recommend it. Central Texas is full of native hardwoods. Much of it is made of mesquite, oak, and walnut. I heat it with a wood stove. High ceilings, so no need for a/c. Central Texas is also a good place to grow food. My house and yard are full of animals. Life is better around animals.
